National glory for Tyriani and Nate

Tyriani and Nate Wood turned the Sub Junior section of the Speedway Karting Association of Australasia (SKAA) national titles into a family affair.

The Woody Point siblings took the top two places in the feature (final) race after four qualifying heats at Avalon Speedway in Victoria.

Tyriani, 10, started the final in third but crossed the line first, continuing her fine form since taking up the sport just 12 months ago.

Brother Nate, 11, who lined-up second on the grid, finished as runner-up in his first meeting for a year.

This was after the feature race was restarted several times, including once when Nate was in the lead.

It was also the first time the peninsula pair had competed against each other at the same event.

“We’re stoked,” said mum Kelly, “We thought they had a chance (of medals). I haven’t really got my voice back yet with all the shouting.”

In her four heats, Tyriani started in fifth, second, sixth and first positions - and finished second, third, third, fourth.

Nate started third, fourth, first and sixth - and finished fourth, second, first, second.

Tyriani went into the national titles with the NSW state title, while Nate already had a third-place finish at this level to his credit.

Their next meeting will be at Maryborough in April. Both are already entered for the Sub Junior class races.

The Wood family - father Ben and mum Kelly also compete - also thanked their sponsors for their support.
