New chapter for school's program

Students at a Moreton Bay school have been given a huge $10,000 boost to their growing percussion music program.

Deception Bay State High School was one of just five in Australia to receive a 2025 Yamaha Great Start Grant.

Sarah Crone, Acting Head of Arts – Drama and Music teacher said the grant will help buy timpani and snare drums.

“This is a huge boost for our percussion students,” Sarah said, “we’re incredibly grateful to Yamaha for this opportunity.

“It truly marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for percussion at Deception Bay State High School.”

Yamaha's Great Start Grant’ provides schools with the tools to inspire young musicians. This year’s focus is on the drum and percussion studio.

“Percussion involves a wide and expensive collection of instruments. Many schools struggle to fund the purchase of all instruments.

"At Deception Bay, we also have a marching drumline, which requires resources.

“Our percussion specialist Bec Quain recognised this in her first term and applied for the grant, knowing this could spark a significant change for percussion students and the broader program.”

Deception Bay State High School has around 70 students, from Years 7-12, in its instrumental music program, with another 20 in the percussion program.

They perform in various ensembles including the school’s concert band, stage band and marching drums.

“Music education is so important for young people, building their confidence, teaching skills like collaboration and offering a real sense of belonging,” Sarah said.

“At Deception Bay, we absorb the majority of the costs so that all students can access the program regardless of their financial situation.

“For many of our students, this is one of the reasons they come to school and love engaging in our program.”

The school aims to expand its program, “strengthen partnerships” with primary schools and give students “real-world musical experiences and performance opportunities”.
