New community space opens at Deception Bay

Deception Bay foreshore is one step closer to becoming a hub for family-friendly fun with the completion of stage one of the Joseph Crescent Community Space.

Mayor Peter Flannery says the new space will allow the Redcliffe Environmental Form to continue protecting and promoting the natural environment in the area, as well as being a meeting place for members of the community.

The Joseph Crescent Community Space – on the former DPI Fisheries site - joins the Deception Bay Community Hall, which was completed earlier this year, as a focal point for residents.

“Community spaces in every pocket of Moreton Bay is a top priority of this Council, so families have places to relax, and enjoy themselves,” Mayor Flannery says.

More work planned

When stage two of the Joseph Crescent community space is completed the precinct will be home to grassy play areas, a playground and covered barbecue and picnic areas.

Mayor Flannery says the $2.4 million community building precinct and car park will be leased to the Redcliffe Environmental Forum for a nominal rate.

“This consists of an open plan meeting room that can be divided into two smaller rooms if need be, a canteen area which opens up onto the awesome deck area which is all accessible for people with disabilities.

“I’d like to thank the State Government for their amazing contribution of $600,000 to help make this project a reality for the people of Deception Bay.”

Bancroft MP Chris Whiting says the centre will be a great space for locals to use and will also increase foot traffic for local businesses.

“I’m thrilled to see stage one of this awesome project completed and I can’t wait to see stage two finished to activate the foreshore precinct and give families even more reason to visit,” he says.

“Locals are keen to see a meeting place like this where they can picnic, exercise and just enjoy the fresh sea air, and I’m proud to be able to help deliver that.

“This will also bring in a healthy number of visitors to the foreshore to help support local businesses and hopefully be the catalyst for more to pop up in the future.”

Connecting community

Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) says the centre is one of many projects helping to revitalise and grow the Deception Bay community.

“This new Joseph Crescent Community Space will perfectly complement the work we’re doing around Deception Bay to keep up with the growing demand and expectations of our wonderful community,” she says.

“We’ve just completed the state-of-the-art Deception Bay Community Hall in the centre of town, which has been a massive hit since it opened.

“The Skate Park is next in line to get a $1.5 million renewal and upgrade and we are upgrading plenty of parks and playgrounds across the area too.

“I can’t wait to see this all come to life so locals and visitors can enjoy this space for many years to come.”
