New red benches recognising domestic violence

Three new red benches reminding people that domestic violence occurs in all communities were launched in the Moreton Bay Region last week.

The launch, at the Caboolture Sports Club, builds on more than 20 other benches across the region as part of The Red Bench Project.

Six more will be installed in coming months - at Caboolture Cricket, Caboolture Dog Obedience, Caboolture Rugby, Caboolture Touch Football, Caboolture Softball and Caboolture Sports Soccer clubs.

The Red Bench Project was launched by the Red Rose Foundation as a permanent reminder that domestic violence occurs within all of our communities.

The presence of a red bench in a public location aims to raise community awareness and provide an opportunity for the important issue to remain visible.

New support room

The initiative was officially opened by Burpengary Police station officer in charge Senior-Sergeant Michelle Dodds, who has created a vulnerable persons support room and statement-taking room at her station.

Moreton Police Superintendent John Hallam says the room will make visiting the station less daunting for vulnerable people.

“This room provides a safe, trusting, and relaxed environment for police to speak to vulnerable persons, sometimes at the worst times of their lives”, Superintendent Hallam says.

“We wish to thank all the sponsors who contributed to these projects - without your contributions these projects would not become a reality.”
