New tender process for Moreton barge

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has opted to commence a fresh tender process for a barge service from Redcliffe to Moreton Island (Mulgumpin).

It comes as the department reveals it has been unable to “conclude the previous tender process”.

The initial stage is expected to be concluded in January 2022, enabling any proponent, including those already engaged in the process to make a submission.

State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath says she shares the community’s frustrations that the process has taken “some time”.

“I have made our community’s views clear to the Department of Transport and Main Roads - local residents want a barge service. However, I do understand the need to go through a proper tender process, to ensure a successful operator is found,” she says.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to supporting local tourism and local jobs and recognises the need to find the right barge operator to ensure our community can thrive into the future.”

The State Government has committed $4 million to support the establishment of the barge service.
