No boat? No problem for new Dragons
Dragons Abreast Pumicestone, the newest members of Dragons Abreast Australia (DAA), may not have a boat, but it’s not stopped their first fundraiser.
The group officially launched last month and has joined Step Up To Beat Breast Cancer, where each participant aims to take at least 10,000 steps a day in August.
Halfway through the month, the Pumicestone team has already raised more than $2000, smashing its initial target of $750!
Funds raised in the month-long National Breast Cancer Foundation challenge will go towards vital research.
The new Dragons Abreast Pumicestone aims to raise breast cancer awareness, encourage personal growth and development through participation.
Activities include discussion groups, events and organised tours. Although the primary focus is breast cancer, those with all cancers are welcome.
Ningi resident Kerry Kinross, the founding secretary of Dragons Abreast Pumicestone, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 49.
“Our aim, as the 27th member group of the national body, is to be an inclusive support group for women cancer survivors and to empower them with the courage and strength to face their obstacles through fellowship,” she said.
“Dragons Abreast groups are traditionally associated with Dragon Boat paddling, but the DAA philosophy of Awareness, Participation and Inclusiveness has seen us adopt Connect, Move and Live to drive the Pumicestone group.”
The group welcomes female cancer survivors and their supporters.
