Put your best foot forward to help Wounded Heroes

Staff from Bribie Island Bowls Club are calling for volunteers to lace up their walking shoes and put their best foot forward to help support past and present Australian Defence Force personnel as part of their 2023 Kokoda Challenge Charity Walk.

Held annually throughout the month of April, the challenge sees participants walk 96km – the length of the Kokoda Track – between now and Anzac Day.

Bribie Island Bowls Club Community Coordinator Kerry Muller said the aim of the Kokoda Challenge was to raise money for Wounded Heroes, an organisation that supports Australian servicemen and women with the financial, emotional and personal hardships that are often part of military life.

“Wounded Heroes funds support services for deployed personnel, the wounded, and their families,” Kerry said.

“Assistance can be as simple as food, fuel, telephone or rent, but they can also provide solutions for the more difficult or ongoing issues with short-term emergency relief payments to individuals and their families.

“Wounded Heroes is a fantastic organisation that does whatever it takes to provide support services for defence personnel, and we are proud to be able to help them continue this work.”

Taking part in the challenge is easy. Participants can complete the 96km walk in their own neighbourhoods or the set walking track along the Pumicestone Passage waterfront walkway opposite the club.

“Depending on your level of fitness, we’re recommending participants could cover that distance in 24 days, which would be an average of 4km a day,” Kerry explains.

“You can record your daily distance at the club’s Kokoda Challenge checkpoint which will be manned daily from 6.30-9am.

“This is an exciting event to be involved with and people have shown an interest in walking the distance from places near and far for such a worthwhile cause.”
