Ready for big kick-off in Caboolture

Teams, players, officials and supporters from across Queensland will converge on Caboolture tomorrow for the 2021 First Nations Indigenous Football Cup.

Australia’s premier Indigenous football tournament is being held at Caboolture Sports Football Club, Aquatic Dr, Burpengary, from November 4-6.

It will have men’s women’s and youth teams - from as far the Gold Coast up to Cairns - prize money and a free Family Fun Day on Saturday at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex.

For the first time, Queensland Indigenous Football State teams will also be selected at the tournament.

Damian Munday, a proud Gunggari man and Managing Director of Queensland Indigenous Football, said it would be a showcase of “quality football”.

“The First Nations Indigenous Football Cup will also be an important cultural gathering for Aboriginal and Torres Strait people that will include stalls, entertainment, activities for kids, and coaching clinics in the future,” he said.

Lawrence Gilbert, CEO Naree Event Management, will have representatives on hand to talent spot for possible future Australian selection.

The event is being supported by Moreton Bay Regional Council and Football Queensland.

“This is a special event not to be missed, celebrating culture and sport coming together,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.

Ryan Fett, from Football Queensland, added: “While COVID-19 has affected interstate travel, we expect that this year’s event will continue to set the foundation for Indigenous football as Australia’s premier footballing event."

The Community Family Fun Day, on Saturday will run from 10am-5pm, entry is free with rides, an inflatable football field, story time and a range of other activities.
