Sisters strike gold at state titles

Redcliffe sisters Mara and Amelie have both added state water polo champion medals to their collections.

Mara, a Scarborough State School student, competed at her first Queensland championship titles having only taken up the sport this season.

She was part of the Mermaids Under 12 Maroon team which won its first major championship beating the Australian Youth Championship title holders and Brisbane champions All Hallows to the state crown.

Amelie, who goes to Redcliffe State High School, was in the Mermaids Under 16 Maroon team which went undefeated in the regular rounds.

Mermaids then beat tough opponents North Brisbane Polo Bears to claim the Queensland title again, after landing the Brisbane title last month.

Medals were presented by the Australian Water Polo League’s Queensland Thunder players Chelsea Johnson and Kate Blew.

The Water Polo Queensland state titles were from April 1-4 at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and April 12-15 at Miami Aquatic Centre, as well as the Gold Coast Performance Centre, Runaway Bay.
