Steeled for major dam upgrade

Construction is underway to strengthen North Pine Dam – with supplies drinking water to Moreton Bay and north Brisbane.

The upgrade will improve safety and secure the future of one of South-East Queensland’s major water supply assets.

Specialist contractor SRG Global Civil started precision drilling through the dam wall in November to install 55 post-tensioned anchors. The anchors will provide around 75,000 tonnes of effective weight to the dam wall to ensure it continues to perform safely during extreme weather events.

Ranging from 39 to 101 metres in length, the anchors are being installed vertically from the dam crest into the foundation rock. The staged strengthening project will almost 246 kilometres of high-tensile steel strand.

Seqwater Executive General Manager Infrastructure Planning and Capital Delivery Sarah Dixon said the project will support the planned major dam upgrade.

“While the dam has operated safely since it was built in 1976, the major upgrade planned will ensure it meets modern engineering and design standards which have evolved since it was originally constructed,” she said.

The work is supporting around 50 jobs on-site and is expected to continue into late 2026, weather and site conditions permitting.
