Students swap beds for floors

Spending the night on a school corridor floor may not sound like fun – but that’s what students at a college in Moreton Bay did, for a powerful cause.

It was the way 13-year-old students at Australian Christian College Moreton in Caboolture chose to step into the shoes of those doing it tough.

As part of their annual Community Service Project, the Year 8 cohort collected more than 3500 food and hygiene items for Caboolture Community Action.

With Federal Member for Longman Terry Young and State Member for Pumicestone Ariana Doolan, 28 students cooked and packaged 494 butter chicken meals in the college kitchens.

The meals were using by Caboolture Community Action, a not-for-profit volunteer organisation, as food relief for those in need.

ACC Moreton's project, which began in 2023 in response to rising homelessness, has become a hallmark of the school’s culture of service and empathy.

For many students, the highlight was the Sleep Out – trading beds for yoga mats, soup and bread, to better understand life for those without a safe home.

“We’re so proud of the students and their compassion and commitment,” Terry Young said.

“Not only did they cook over 500 meals in one sitting for those experiencing hardship, but also participated in a sleepout as a powerful way to better understand the challenges faced by many in our community.”

ACC Moreton is a Prep-12, co-educational, Christian school offering campus education in the Moreton Bay region and distance education in Queensland, interstate and overseas.
