Liam Wilson, from All Star Boxing Academy in Lawnton, has no plans to sit quietly and wait for a third world title shot – he wants big fights now.
Seconds after stopping Jorge Santana with a trademark “left hook from hell” in round four, the Redcliffe-born Caboolture resident reset his sights.
Santana, from the Dominican Republic, had won 15 of 16 pro bouts before facing Wilson, who now has 17 wins from 20 fights.
On Fox Sports, Wilson, 29, said: “I want George Kambosos. I’m a proud Australian. So why wouldn’t you want to make an all-Australian showdown?”
“Mr Damage is back. We’re back to our old ways. The left hook comes out when it’s warranted.”
No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose had “no problem with that” and promptly backed Wilson to win.
Ex-world champion Kambosos won his first 20 fights but has since lost four of six, including for the IBF world super lightweight crown.
Wilson, like all WBO super lightweights, is waiting on world champion Emanual Navarette, from Mexico and Charley Suarez, the number one challenger.
Navarette’s clash with filipino Suarez in May was ruled a “non-contest” due to an accidental headbutt which cut the champion. But on review it was a punch.
The mandatory rematch has not yet been scheduled, forcing other challengers, such as Wilson who is ranked four, to wait.
Navarette controversially beat Wilson when given a 27-second count – rather than the mandatory 10 – when knocked down and losing his mouth guard.
However, by taking and winning tough fights, Wilson is enhancing his chances of another crack at the world title … when the opportunity arises.
And George Rose has already stated he would like to set-up that world title shot in Australia.
