Work starts on “priority” development

Construction officially started today on hundreds of new homes in a key Moreton Bay Priority Development Area (PDA).

The first sod was turned at North Harbour, in Burpengary East, to fast-track the first 249 new homes amid the current housing crisis.

Planning continues for at least 3700 homes in the declared area which will include terraces and detached homes, three and four-bedroom villas, detached houses and apartments.

The North Harbour housing boost is expected to generate almost 2000 jobs and add $456 million into the regional economy.

Burpengary East’s population has increased by 43 per cent since 2021 and is expected to continue growing significantly again by 2041.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said every lever is being pulled to ease the housing crisis.

“This includes unlocking land, delivering infrastructure or streamlining approvals so homes can be built faster,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

“The power of a Priority Development Area is that it fast-tracks homes by removing barriers for industry within regions experiencing strong population growth."

Member for Pumicestone Ariana Doolan added: “Projects like North Harbour will play an important role in ensuring more Queenslanders have a place to call home.

“We’re finally seeing fast and meaningful steps toward easing pressure in places like here in Burpengary thanks to the right support being delivered after a decade of decline.”

North Harbour Project Director Bryan Finney said: “Today’s sod turning marked “an exciting milestone as we start construction of the first neighbourhood within the PDA.

“This is a significant step in bringing to life our vision for a vibrant waterfront destination in the City of Moreton Bay that will deliver new homes, create local jobs and provide exceptional lifestyle opportunities.”

Urban Development Institute of Australia Queensland CEO Kirsty Chessher-Brown said it “demonstrates what happens when the State and industry work together: bringing more houses and jobs to Queenslanders, sooner.”
