Work to start on new park

Construction will soon start on a new $3.4 million play and picnic park, which has “been in the works” of Moreton Bay region more than 20 years.

Moreton Bay City Council says work at John Bray Park, on Walsham St in Bray Park, is to start late this year and finish mid-2025.

“From our community consultation we’ve shaped the new park to include an all ages playground, amenities, picnic facilities, multi-sports court, open space and additional car parking,” Acting Mayor Jodie Shipway said.

“It will provide shade and embed a range of nature play elements to get kids ‘back to nature’ and curious about the natural environment and outdoors.”

Residents feared plans to upgrade John Bray Park will destroy important koala habitat and put other native wildlife at risk.

They called on Council to alter its playground concept plan before work begins next month.

Councillor Jim Moloney (Div 8) said council had reduced the number of trees affected by the work and will retained “as many small regrowth saplings as we can”.

“We've also increased tree replanting since the original design, adding over 100 new trees and more than 2500 predominantly native shrubs and groundcovers.

“Many of these additional trees are in 25lt growbags to enhance koala food trees around the site and further upstream along the corridor where existing tree cover is sparser.”
