$13m upgrade for sports ground

A masterplan has been endorsed to upgrade one of Moreton Bay region’s key sports grounds.

Moreton Bay City Councillors last week approved the plan for Rob Akers Reserve, off Bells Pocket Rd in Strathpine – but securing funding may take years.

Rob Akers Reserve is home to Pine Rivers Swans AFL and the upgrade would improve facilities, provide more parking and increase use.

Work includes restoring the second field and installing lighting for evening matches.

There would also be “informal recreation opportunities” for visitors and residents including play areas, fitness spaces and an off-leash dog park.

Designated areas for future koala habitat planting have been considered so Pine Rivers Koala Care and other environmental groups can continue their work.

The masterplan may cost $13 million but having endorsed it, Cr Jodie Shipway said this is “a great opportunity to put our hat out to state and federal members”.

Swans’ clubhouse was recently upgraded with $1.3 million funding from Council, the State Government and AFL Queensland.

Mayor Peter Flannery said: “The masterplan for Rob Akers Reserve focuses on upgrading existing infrastructure while preserving and enhancing current uses and supporting the community of users.

“It provides a well-considered balance of active sports fields, new and revitalised play areas, and engaging informal open space areas for public enjoyment and acts as a guide to future development and improvements.

“This is why the plan also looks at upgrading the dog training area to support day and night activity for the Pine Rivers Dog Training Club and introducing new  play areas, shelters, seating and barbecues for the wider community.

“The plan also considers the surrounding pedestrian network and makes recommendations to improve pedestrian connectivity.”

Cr Jim Moloney (Div 8) said the masterplan would not be possible without the support and feedback from the community.

“I’d like to thank all the sporting and recreational clubs, environmental groups and local users for their input and guidance,” he said.

“This is a fantastic plan for Rob Akers Reserve that responds to community requests for more active lifestyle options for both sport and informal recreation opportunities while protecting the environment.”

“Since the clubhouse upgrade, the club experienced a huge boost in participation and members, particularly among female players.”
