Luna still Australia's top dog

Luna has held on to the title of Australia's most popular dog name for the fourth year running, with pet owners continuing to look to the stars for inspiration.
The celestial-inspired name has topped Compare the Market's annual list of popular dog names for 2026, ahead of Teddy, Coco, Milo and Daisy.
The rankings, based on thousands of pet insurance quotes, suggest Australians have a soft spot for cute, cuddly and classic names for their four-legged companions.
Compare the Market's Chris Ford said Luna's popularity could be partly attributed to pop culture.
“Our furry friends are so special to us, we want to give them a noble name,” he said.
“But if you’re choosing Luna because you think it’s ‘a little bit different’, it turns out you’re actually in pretty good company. Pop culture references such as Harry Potter’s Luna Lovegood and the 90s cartoon series Sailor Moon have helped make the name popular, especially among millennials.”

While Luna continues to lead the pack, the remaining names suggest Australian dog owners favour familiar, affectionate names.
Chris said choosing a name was often one of the first big decisions for new pet owners, but there were other things worth considering before bringing a puppy home.
"Choosing a pet's name can take weeks. Australians spend hours researching breeds, comparing food, picking out beds and loading up on toys before bringing a new puppy home," he said.
He encouraged owners to pay similar attention to pet insurance, particularly differences in waiting periods, annual limits and reimbursement percentages.
The rankings were compiled from pet names submitted through Compare the Market's pet insurance quote service during 2026.
