Battle to save street library

Residents and politicians have thrown their support behind moves to save a new street library, which may have to close.

Melissa Forbes opened Maine Road Book Nook last month, repurposing a box and placing it outside her fence by Beedham Street bus stop.

But a complaint was made to Moreton Bay City Council which has now asked Melissa to remove the street library.

“I asked (Council) for more information about the complaint, but I believe position is the issue,” she said yesterday.

“The request for a permit has also been denied. If it (street library) was behind the fence it may be fine.

“I am in contact with Councillor Karl Winchester, who is looking into it for me … and a friend has started a petition."

“The street library was going so well," Melissa said. "Everyday people were taking books out, putting books in. I had three say it inspired them to add books.”

Cr Winchester (Div 6) said on social media "street libraries are great” and he is “happy to take a look at possible solutions”.

Cr Winchester was among hundreds who commented on Melissa’s Facebook posts about the plight of her street library.

Leah Clark said: “So many people who have nothing better to do than complain. Thank you for trying to show community support."

Kim O’Neil offered support and sympathy: “Such a lovely thing to do. I can’t believe that someone has complained about it.

“Such a sad reflection on our lack of community spirit these days. I really hope Council will help out.”

Shelly Bayne asked: “What could they possibly complain about? I’m flabbergasted.”

Bronwen Cara said she would “love to know why Council decided to side with one person’s complaint?”

Max Amillion wondered: “What was the reasoning for the complaint? Have them justify it.

“If you have to remove it, let's all take a turn and display it outside our own homes. Then keep moving it around the community each time Council say it has to be moved.”
