Bribie Island Bowls Club charity month

By Ella Bradford

This September Bribie Island Bowls Club is running a new fundraising initiative supporting foundations that help fund medical research into cancers and diseases that affect many.

Bribie Island Bowls Club Community Co-ordinator Kerry Muller says the club has selected five foundations to raise money for each week in September.

Three events have already been held, with two more to come.

“Unfortunately, Brain Cancer, Prostate and Testicular Cancer, Blood Cancer, Breast Cancer and Parkinson’s Disease all seem to touch our lives in some horrible way, whether it’s an illness or cancer that we face ourselves or it attacks our friends and loved ones,” Kerry says.

“Sometimes when you focus on fundraising one specific cancer, you run the risk of alienating some people who may feel more passionate about fundraising for a different cause, especially at the moment given our tough economic climate.”

Kerry says there will be guest speakers on Wednesdays.

“Each week, on Wednesday the club will also have speakers that have been personally affected or whose lives have been touched by these diseases as well as providing information about the amazing research these five foundations are currently undertaking,” she says.

“The club will be donating all green fees from each Wednesday bowls and will be holding a sporting memorabilia auction with a signed 1996 Brisbane Bears football, a signed 1992 Broncos football and signed Broncos and Dolphins NRL jerseys, plus a mega raffle.”

The sporting memorabilia auction and a mega raffle is on October 7 from 4pm.

The money raised by the club will be equally donated to the five foundations.
