Call for action to stop hoons

Physical barriers are needed to stop “next level” hooning at a major car park, says a local business owner.

He said the long-running issue returned early last week with a couple of utes at Scarborough’s Thurecht Pde, opposite Coast Guard Redcliffe.

But it escalated sharply towards the weekend, with The Moreton Daily reporting on Friday around 30 vehicles left a trail of rubber and damage.

“It has been an on-going problem for a long time,” the local business owner said, “but really ramped up on Thursday and Friday.

“I think we need physical barriers … speed bumps, strategically placed, to try and tackle this.

“We’re doing everything we can as a community, meeting Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Police, Neighbourhood Watch, a local action group is taking this up.

“People are reporting these incidents but, from here, there doesn’t appear to be much communication with TMR which has all the footage.

“We have offered police 24-hour-a-day access to our site to monitor and film it.

“We appreciate what police do, but there needs to be a specific operation to tackle this.

“Otherwise, I think it’s only a matter of time before someone may be killed.”

The business owner believes footage would have been caught on CCTV, installed by Queensland Transport and Main Roads, which owns the land.

The business owner said damage from previous incidents – where hoons “lost it” doing burnouts - had cost $40,000 to repair.

Now fencing has been damaged again in two places as cars, utes and off-road motorbikes drag racing and doing burnouts.

Incoming State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley, who has not yet been declared or sworn in, says police would be aware of it.

She says she will work with the police to see if greater presence is possible, particularly at night.

Ms Dooley says Moreton Bay City Council’s mobile CCTV cameras, with numberplate recognition, may help as the cameras have been successfully deployed in other areas for the same reason.

She encouraged residents to continue to phone the Hoon Hotline and council.

Ms Dooley says the State Government needs to work with Council and police to find a solution.
