Calling keen Canasta players

A Caboolture woman with a passion for playing cards is aiming to start a small Canasta group.

Tonia Byrnes took up playing Canasta about two decades ago and while others are content to play the original version of the multi-faceted game, she prefers the challenge of the Pony, Five and Bolivia variations.

“It’s more interesting and more challenging and that’s what I love about those games,” Tonia says.

She ran a Canasta group at Woody Point for many years and wants to start one now she’s moved to Caboolture.

Tonia is hoping to find up to five other like-minded women aged in their 60s to join her for sessions on Wednesdays and is willing to teach novices.

Learn new skills

“I’m looking for people that like a challenge, are willing to learn new things and just enjoy a day with a small group of ladies.”

She says her previous group enjoyed coming together for their weekly catch-ups, which consisted of a game in the morning, followed by lunch and another game in the afternoon.

“We all strive to win, but it doesn’t spoil my day if I don’t win,” Tonia laughs.

“I find it exhilarating, I get excited when it comes to Wednesday cards.”

The free Canasta card game group will meet on Wednesdays, 10am-3pm at a Caboolture venue.
