Wilson close to world title shot

Liam Wilson, from All Star Boxing at Lawnton, will put his world title dream on the line again this weekend - with a huge prize awaiting the winner.

Redcliffe-born Wilson takes on former two-division world champion Stephen Fulton, from the US, in Sydney on Sunday.

The fight at 133lbs, slightly above the 130lb limit for super featherweight, has been elevated to a co-main event alongside Tim Tzuyu v Errol Spence.

Wilson, who grew up in Caboolture, enters the fight with 18 wins and three defeats from 21 professional fights - which include two world title challenges.

Fulton, 32, has won 23 and lost two of 25 pro bouts which include holding the WBO and WBC super bantamweight and WBC featherweight world titles.

Reports are also circulating that is now a world title fight eliminator for the WBA super featherweight crown, held by Anthony Cacace.

Wilson gave little away at the pre-fight media conference saying: “In terms of the weight, it’s not my problem.

“I’ve prepared for the best version of Stephen and I’ll fight him at whatever weight it is. I’m ready.

“As a young kid I always imagined being in these big fights. To have a top fighter on my resume like Stephen Fulton means everything to me.”

Fulton was equally coy, saying the weight change request was made weeks ago and it had “nothing to do with preparing for the fight”.

Promoter George Rose, from No Limit Boxing, said “Liam Wilson didn’t care” about the late weight change.

“They are up for it,” he said. “It speaks volumes for the man Liam Wilson is. I know when this guy is ready he comes out to perform.”

Wilson has won his last five fights and moved up to two in the WBO world rankings.
