Calling young anglers for fishing competition
Young anglers will battle it out for fishing glory, bragging rights and a share of $2000 in prizes during the first-ever Moreton Youth Week Fishing Comp which starts this weekend.
The competition, which is free to enter, is open to young people aged 12-25 years and will run from April 2-11.
Entrants will be fishing for saltwater, freshwater or pest species from any land-based location in the Moreton Bay Region.
It is an online photo competition and they will submit photos of their catches via the 2 Bent Rods app
Samantha Beckmann from 2 Bent Rods says the competition is about encouraging youth to enjoy the ‘great outdoors’.
“For some, they will be joining because they want to make a difference to the environment and will target pest species. Others will be more competitive and will be competing to win prizes. Other will join in for the fun,” she says.
“It will also be a great chance to educate everyone on invasive pest species and the harm they do to our waterways. There will even be a prize category for picking up rubbish and helping the environment.
“There will be social media posts on the Moreton Youth Week Fishing Comp Facebook page on rules, regulations. Entrants can also share some of their catches and glory photos.”
A Youth Development Officer from Moreton Bay Regional Council says the idea came from a group of trainees involved in a program at Bribie Island. Council has funded the competition.
“We were talking about opportunities and events that might appeal and they all said that they'd love a fishing competition,” the officer says.
