The team at Platypus Dental has a vision to revolutionise the standard of dental care in Australia and change perceptions of dentistry.
Dr Terry Pu, who opened the practice in June 2022, says the patient is at the heart of everything he and his staff do.
“We want to make sure people get the best experience with our practice and to make sure we change people’s perception of what dentistry actually is. We don’t want people to be anxious and fearful of dentistry,” Terry says.
Platypus Dental uses technology to not only help the dentist better diagnose and treat patients, but to also make the experience more comfortable for patients and to educate them.
Terry says while dental theory has not changed much during the past 40-50 years, the method of delivering treatment and care for patients has.
“By investing in not only our staff’s education but in different technology and equipment, we’re now able to provide treatment at a much higher level of care and a much more comfortable level of care,” he explains.
Equally important is customer service – how his staff interact with patients and explain the care/treatment they are providing.
“We’re all about making sure we’re providing the best optimal care for the patient and to provide a very different experience for them compared to other practices,” Terry says.
“Everyone is on their own journey and we really want to be part of that journey … to help guide you along in life and say this is what we think is best for yourself and provide you with all the options and to make sure you understand clearly what we can do and what you should do at home to help yourself and your family to prevent dental problems in the future.”
Platypus Dental has been built on a foundation of five values: autonomy, respect, integrity, collaboration and compassion.
Services offered include Airflow® dental spa, dental implants, All-on-X dental implants, wisdom tooth extraction, clear aligners, tooth whitening, dental crowns, general dentistry, emergency dentistry and root canal treatment.
“On top of that, we pride ourselves in offering oral surgery - complex teeth extraction and implants,” Terry explains.
He also takes on rehabilitation cases – patients who have experienced drug abuse or domestic violence and have suffered significant dental damage.
Terry works with those people to come up with the best method of reconstruction or prosthetics, so they can regain function and confidence.
“That makes us quite different to your general practice out there,” Terry says.
Key to the practice’s rapid growth during the past two and half years has been staff training and development.
Platypus Dental follow Australian Dental Association guidelines and is Quality Innovation Performance (QIP) accredited.
