There have been two new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Queensland in the past 24 hours, one of which is the result of community transmission, while the other was detected in hotel quarantine.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says there are 46 active cases across the state.
Yesterday more than 14,000 COVID-19 tests were carried out, with 7828 people vaccinated.
Ms Palaszczuk says the locally acquired case is linked to the Portuguese restaurant at the Community Centre in Ellen Grove.
Alpha strain
“This is excellent news,” she says.
“We’re dealing with this Alpha strain – it’s not the Delta strain.
“It appears that everything is under control at this point in time.
“I thank Queenslanders for doing the right thing – I know that it’s a big ask to continue to wear masks and check in.”
Ms Palaszczuk says people over 70 who are not vaccinated should minimise their risk of contracting COVID-19 by limiting community exposure.
“Of course you can see family members,” she says.
Reassuring news
Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young says one of the overnight cases is a traveller from overseas, while the locally acquired case has been in home isolation since July 2 and is now in hospital.
She says genome sequencing has linked the Prince Charles worker with COVID-19 to the Portuguese restaurant cluster, which is the Alpha strain.
“It is reassuring that it looks like we just have that one outbreak that we need to continue to manage.
“We need people to keep on getting tested and to remain in (home) quarantine,” Ms Young says.
“There are over 4000 people in home quarantine – the only reason you can leave home quarantine is if you have an emergency or to get a COVID test.”
Ms Young says it is critical for people who have had their first Pfizer vaccination to receive their second dose no later than 42 days later – but preferably after three weeks.
Download Queensland app
Health Minister and Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath says the Queensland check-in app will be mandatory from July 9.
“Don’t wait to get the QR code up outside your business,” Ms D’Ath says.
“I did notice yesterday that one QR code was in black and white.
“I encourage (businesses) to print out the colour (version).
“People have come to know the maroon.
Wear a mask
Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski says people must wear masks, with 13 people issued with infringement notices yesterday for being in public without one.
