As Crew Legal celebrates five years since it opened on the Redcliffe Peninsula, we reflect on the significant business milestone and how the firm has led the way in community involvement.

Managing Director Shane Crew says Crew Legal opened at 292 Anzac Ave, Kippa-Ring, on February 1, 2020.

He and Director Hayley Clark had worked together for many years at another firm and were faced with the question of what they wanted for themselves and their families in the years ahead.

They decided to go into partnership, opening a boutique personal injury firm from scratch with a handful of files/clients and a four-person team - Shane, Hayley, Rebecca Crew and Shannen Bielby.

Since then, the firm has now grown to a team of nine with a strong focus on ensuring members of the community who find themselves injured, through no fault of their own, have access to their full entitlement of compensation at a fair cost.

Choosing the Redcliffe Peninsula as the firm’s base made sense to Shane and Hayley who sought to strike ‘work/life balance’.

“Because our respective families lived, went to school and played their sport in the Peninsula area, it was decided that the best position to base our professional lives was in the very community that we have grown so fond of being a part of,” Shane explains.

Crew Legal is the only specialised boutique Personal Injury Law Practice on the Redcliffe Peninsula.

“There are national law firms with branch offices located at North Lakes, but no such firms have true links to the local community like Crew Legal,” Hayley says.

“Our philosophy is to provide injured people with the best advice, the best outcomes and to do so at a fair price.

“We are able to achieve that aim by providing the service at local level and attracting our work and referrals through relationships, community support and involvement rather than large advertising budgets.

“This enables us to provide high quality advice and outcomes within a reasonable cost structure.”

Proud achievements

Shane and Hayley believe their biggest achievement during the past five years must be considered in two parts - business success and community footprint.

“In relation to our business success, it has certainly been one hell of a ride. When we opened our doors on February 1, 2020, we could not have predicted that three weeks later the world would come to a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Shane recalls.

“This was certainly not an ideal environment to have commenced a business some three weeks before. However, with patience, hard work and quality advice, we have grown the business from a team of four to a team of nine.

“We have helped in excess of 500 clients over that period with their injury law matters and have built a thriving practice which allows ourselves and our team members to enjoy professional success but also work/life balance.”

The firm’s biggest achievement in community involvement is the continued growth of its annual Spring Gala Ball, which raises money for Redcliffe Hospital.

“In the first year the ball raised just shy of $15,000.00. In the third event, held last year, that result rose to a little over $46,000,” Hayley says.

The three events have raised a total of more than $80,000 for the hospital.

“With the continued support of the local business community, we are sure that we can grow that event to be a leading annual event in the region. If we can do that, that will provide greater satisfaction than any business success that we enjoy along the way,” Hayley says.

Shane adds: “From the outset, our goal was not to just open a local law firm but to commence a business which became part of the community, supported the community and gave back to the community which we are proud members of”.

Crew Legal also supports junior sporting organisations such as Redcliffe Padres baseball, Redcliffe Dolphins rugby league, Peninsula Power football and others.

Other community initiatives have included a Strategic Partnership with Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT), Strategic Partnership with The Redcliffe Peninsula media organisation and sponsoring events including Redcliffe KiteFest and Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival.

“Community involvement remains a key focus of our business and one which will continue to grow and evolve in the years ahead,” Shane says.

Plans for the future

When Shane and Hayley opened Crew Legal five years ago, they envisioned building to a team of 10, enjoying financial success but also raising their children on the Peninsula while enjoying its lifestyle.

“Five years into the process, we have almost reached that goal and are now reassessing our future goals,” Hayley says.

“We are continuing to strive to position ourselves as the go-to law firm for people living on the Redcliffe Peninsula and the Moreton Bay region when they suffer injuries at work, in motor vehicle accidents and in public places.”

Shane adds: “To do that, we will continue our client-first approach, where all that we do is directed towards ensuring the very best financial outcomes for those persons who have been unfortunate enough to be injured through no fault of their own.

“If we continue to strive for those outcomes and continue our focus on leaving a positive imprint in the local community, we envision doubling the size of our team over the next five years whilst maintaining that cherished work/life balance”.
