"Deep concerns" at waterfront plan

Residents fighting plans for a new seven-storey development on Redcliffe's waterfront have taken their battle to the Council chamber.

Ian Flint, representing the body corporate committee at Waves, which has 60 apartments, expressed “deep concerns” over proposals for the adjoining block.

A development application on Council’s website for 25 Marine Pde shows five apartments (one per floor) above a level of parking and below a roof-top terrace.

Using the Community Comment platform, Mr Flint told a full Council meeting the development raised “significant issues for our community”.

“Redcliffe Peninsula is already experiencing high-density residential growth with multiple high-rise developments either existing, under construction or recently approved,” he said.

Consistency

“Given this we question the necessity and suitability of another high-rise on a block of limited size and dimension, especially in such close proximity to surrounding properties.”

Mr Flint said, according to Council’s planning policy an "appropriate development for this location” is a two-three storey building.

“A seven-storey development clearly contradicts this policy, raises concerns about planning consistency and transparency,” he told the meeting.

Being code assessable, not impact assessable, also “deprived affected residents and stakeholders the opportunity to be formally notified of the application or submit objections”.

Quality of life

“The absence of community consultation undermines confidence in the process and prevents those directly impacted having a say in the decisions which will affect their homes and quality of life,” Mr Flint said.

Concerns were also raised about waste collection bins from the new development, which fronts on to a pedestrian crossing, being put in front of Waves.

Community Comment allows residents/ratepayers in the City of Moreton Bay five minutes to address a General Meeting on topics relating to Council business.

Speakers must apply to Council’s CEO with an outline of the topic and submit their full address at least three days before the meeting.
