High Tea at Tiffany’s

At Tiffany's, the name High Tea evokes thoughts of ribbon-finger sandwiches, scones, cream and petite sweet fancies fit for a special occasion. And rightly so, because that's what you'll find there.

Add a touch of old film glamour to this and you have a shiny Hollywood star in the heart of North Lakes. Four years ago, Wilma Candler opened the cafe with business partner Anita Flint, with a vision of creating a venue that would be different from others.

“I thought, we’ll have high tea at Tiffany’s. It’s (a place to celebrate) a happy occasion, it’s somewhere you’re going for a special occasion — a bridal or baby shower,”

Wilma hosted her first wedding there about a year ago, catering for 40 people.

On Mother’s Day, 200 people enjoyed the occasion across four sittings.

“We’re very busy. It’s lovely,” she says.

There’s a selection of high teas on the menu, including high tea for two, Marilyn Monroe high tea, chocolatier’s high tea, Tiffany’s high tea and two versions for children.

Wilma also serves breakfast and light lunches, and makes everything she sells, including highly sought-after scones and cupcakes.

High Tea at Tiffany’s is open 7am-4pm Monday to Friday, and 7am-3pm Saturday and Sunday.

Be sure to take a look at the 12 Hollywood stars on the floor — there’s one for each of her grandchildren, and one for herself.

September 18, North Lakes

For KK Chai, cooking vegetarian and vegan food is second nature. He's grown up eating it and his mum taught him almost everything he knows.

The owner of September 18 has been running his own restaurant for about five years, but worked in the family business long before that.

“We’ve been doing this for almost 20 years in New Zealand,” KK says.

He comes from a Malaysian family of vegetarians with high standards when it comes to food. His mother taught him to make his first dish, which was fried noodles. These days, his signature dish is satay chicken. Chicken? Well, it’s not the real thing, but tastes just like it. It’s made from soy beans. His soy drumsticks are also very popular.

Interestingly KK does not use garlic, onions, chives, leaks or shallots in his cooking, because the flavours are too strong.

He takes pride in every dish he serves, making his own sauces and laksa paste.

“Lots of things I do myself that I don’t give to my staff,” KK says.

September 18 is open Tuesday to Sunday and at Bite Markets, Friday and Saturday from 4-10pm.
