Dolphins keep season alive with win

The Dolphins Intrust Super Cup side will need to keep improving and bring their best game to Tugun, if they are to beat Tweed Seagulls in the second week of semi-finals this weekend.

It will be a tight contest on Saturday, when the fifth-placed Dolphins take on their fourth-placed rivals.

The Dolphins have lost both encounters with Tweed this season, but there were just two points in it when they last met in round 11.

The match-up follows a resounding 40-20 win against Sunshine Coast Falcons at Moreton Daily Stadium on September 18.

The Dolphins led 14-8 at halftime and extended the lead in the second half to keep their season alive.

There were tries to Trai Fuller, Will Partridge (2), Edward Kosi, Tom Ale, Jeremy Hawkins and Viliami Vailea.

Coach Adam Mogg says front rower Lachlan Timm was a standout and he’s happy to see how his game has continued to improve this season.

“I thought there were a number of really good performances across the park,” Mogg says.

He says the loss of key players in the second half forced the team to adapt and adjust, and he’s pleased with how they responded.

“This time of year, in a do or die – win or lose scenario – I’m definitely happy with the result,” Mogg says.

“I’m also happy that some of the boys still think we have improvement in us as well.”

Focus this week

Improvement has been the focus all season and will continue to be what the coach is looking for at training this week and on Saturday against Tweed.

“They’re a really good footy team. I’ve got a lot of respect for them. They’re a big footy team and have good skills in their forwards as well, and a couple of big outside backs,” he says.

Mogg says his side will be aiming to nullify Toby Sexton’s kicking game and centre Brayden McGrady who is “crafty with the footy”.

“They’re real title contenders, but at this time of year everyone playing can win it,” Mogg says.

He says being in the top four is not an advantage this year, given there has been so much time off and disruption to the season.

So, what’s Mogg’s message to the team this week?

“Just focusing on improving. Each week it gets a bit harder. There are some areas in our game we can improve on. The challenge is to make sure we do that,” he says.

He wants to make sure everyone is clear about what they need to do to play better individually and collectively.

“If we do that, we’ll give ourselves a good chance,” he says.

Mogg says he’s proud the Colts and the first-grade team are both playing finals football, given the number of injuries and disruption to the season.

He says it’s proof the club has good systems and processes in place.
