Easing stress for parents this festive season

The festive season is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful for families, especially when it comes to finances. The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program has tips to strengthen family relationships, manage children’s expectations positively and enjoy a less stressful holiday period.

Less is more

It’s normal for kids to dream big and want lots of presents, but in reality, parents can’t always afford everything on those lists. Ask children to name one or two presents on their “top wish” list – and within a set price range. This helps manage expectations and makes it more likely the presents will be appreciated and used, long after the wrapping paper is torn open. There are often alternative versions of expensive items that won’t break the bank. Keeping an eye out for sales and vouchers can help save money too.

Get creative

Handmade or upcycled gifts are not only a low-cost way to show loved ones you care but are also a great way to get creative with kids and create some new family memories. The effort and thought your child puts into the gifts will truly be appreciated by the recipient and gives them a sense of the true spirit of giving.

Start a tradition

The best traditions are often free or low cost – for example, taking a walk or driving by some local Christmas lights, making some simple decorations, or baking a treat to share with friends and family. Kids and grown-ups can join in the fun – and new traditions can be created.

Give the gift of time

Quality time will show your kids that spending time with family and loved ones is the most important part of the festive season – and you’ll all reap the benefits in years to come. And best of all, it’s free!

Take time for you

Holiday seasons are a time when parents and carers often find themselves running errands and putting everyone else's needs before their own. However, it’s important to take care of yourself too. Try to set aside some time for yourself, to recharge your own battery. A little self-care can work wonders in helping parents to feel calmer during busy or stressful times, which has a flow-on effect to kids, too.
