Fun run supports hospital

Fitness enthusiasts are gearing up for the fourth annual REDDY Fun Run/Walk on June 18.

Redcliffe Hospital facility services co-ordinator and event organiser Rhonda Neal says the event has raised more than $30,000 for the hospital auxiliary since its inception.

“We run the annual event in partnership with the Redcliffe Hospital Auxiliary with all funds being distributed by them,” she says.

“The extras purchased by the Auxiliary allow the budget allocated by the government to be used for clinical requirements.

“In partnership with the Auxiliary, last year’s funds were used to purchase five recliners for palliative care, five wheelchairs for our rehabilitation unit for assessment and therapy for our inpatients, (and) clothing and footwear distributed by our social work team for our patients being discharged who require the basic items - in many circumstances our homeless.”

Maternity support

Money raised by the REDDY Fun Run/Walk also helped fund the Jacaranda suite, a dedicated maternity bereavement suite where families can grieve and receive specialised care in private, away from the maternity ward.

“The bereavement room is continuously used for those who require the special care provided by our maternity team,” Rhonda says.

“(It is a) beautiful, dedicated space that provides private, respectful care to women and families experiencing perinatal loss and complications of pregnancy.”

Rhonda says the REDDY Fun Run/Walk has grown from a small event organised by a group of friends to a Redcliffe community event with the Moreton Bay Road runners participating and sponsorship from local businesses.

It follows the same route at the Jetty 2 Jetty fun run, starting and finishing at Pelican Park at Clontarf.

There’s a 21km run, a 10km run or walk and a 5km run or walk, with water stations and turnaround points clearly marked.

Bridge 99.7 FM will broadcasting live, and there will be a coffee van, bacon and egg burgers, a sausage sizzle and medallions and prizes for winners and giveaways for participants.
