Bowls Club raises thousands for charity

Staff from the Bribie Island Bowls Club have been bowled over by the generosity of their local community, with members and their guests donating thousands of dollars for medical research.

The club raised an impressive $17,534 from its inaugural Charity Month Fundraiser, which was held during the month of September.

That money will be equally divided up between five foundations that are looking into cures for major cancers and diseases.

Bribie Island Bowls Club community coordinator Kerry Muller said following the success of this fundraiser, the club would like to do something similar again next year.

“The Bribie Island Bowls Club helps a lot of different organiations and charities throughout the year, but this was the first time we have had a fundraiser go for a whole month,” Kerry said.

“We weren’t sure how it would go, but our members really outdone themselves and were more than happy to donate.

“These cancers and diseases are sadly common - everyone knows someone who has been impacted by either one or even a few of these diseases – and that’s why people were happy to throw a few dollars in.

“It also helped people start those conversations about looking after their health, which I think was a great thing to come from this.

“When it comes to planning the next fundraiser, we will look at who else we can support, and might add some different charities or foundations.

“Every little bit helps, and we are so happy we could help these worthy foundations.”

Throughout the month, the club donated their green fees to the cause, and a mega raffle and sporting memorabilia auction was held.

“The sporting memorabilia alone helped us raise more than $5000,” Kerry said.

“We had a lot of football jerseys that people were interested in – people kept coming up to me and asking if they could buy them before the raffle.

“We had jerseys from the Broncos, Dolphins, Queensland Maroons and the Brisbane Bears, which was the team before the Brisbane Lions.

“The auction was a lot of fun, and we can’t wait to do it all again.”
