Get free flood legal advice

Next week marks one year since the devastating February floods of 2022 and many residents are still dealing with insurance and legal issues.

Legal Aid Queensland is holding community forums, including one at Caboolture, so victims can speak to a lawyer for free.

Legal Aid Queensland’s Flood response Director Paul Holmes is encouraging affected residents to attend the forum which will be at Sports Centre Caboolture on February 23 from 4-8pm.

“We have seen some great outcomes from previous community forums hosted by the Insurance Council of Australia, where we have been able to resolve their claims,” Mr Holmes said.

Data from the Insurance Council of Australia estimates the damage from the last La Niña-generated east coast storm and flooding cost $5.92 billion with more than 296,000 claims lodged across Queensland and New South Wales.

Mr Holmes said there was a handful of common issues that Queenslanders were still dealing with, but people should feel comfortable to ask any questions they make have.

“There are no silly questions when it comes to legal advice, but the most common questions we are seeing are around insurance claim delays, claim refusals, and whether they should agree to a cash settlement.” he said.

“It’s not only insurance legal issues that arise because of the floods. People should seek assistance regarding other legal issues including financial hardship, family law or if they are struggling to pay a loan or a debt.

“We’ve been able to help people negotiate outcomes with their insurer where the claim was initially refused.”

Act now

Mr Holmes also noted the importance of addressing issues as soon as possible to reduce the risk of problems with future natural disaster situations.

“It’s very worrying after watching the Northern Queensland floods this year. We understand the kind of damage that can happen, and the last thing people need is ongoing insurance issues.”
