Good times, great causes

The Belvedere Social Club has been helping the community for more than 20 years and is looking for new members.

President Roza Demetrie says while the club’s fundraising activities were curtailed by COVID-19 restrictions last year, membership has bounced back and they are ready to help those in need.

“Where someone’s child may have made a national team and there’s a trip and they have to pay for airfares and they may be short, they can come to us for help,” Roza says.

“We’ll discuss it among the members of the club and we’ll agree to cover it or donate towards it.”

Roza says the social club has raised more than $150,000 through meat raffles and other activities over the years.

Community support

“We sponsor pen number five at the Peninsula Animal Aid cattery, we’ve donated to Kippa-Ring State School, the MS Society, Meals on Wheels and the Lincoln Powell Memorial Day on the Green, which raises money for brain cancer research at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute,” she says.

Roza says the club is grateful for the support of Nothling Brothers Fine Meats, which supplies meat trays for Friday and Sunday raffles at the Belvedere Hotel.

Membership of the club is $20 a year, which includes discounts at the Belvedere Hotel, invitations to members’ events and two membership draws for cash prizes each week.

“We have a Sunday membership draw, which starts at $100 and jackpots and the Publican’s Purse on Wednesdays provided by the hotel, which starts at $100 and jackpots then at the end of the month if it hasn’t gone off we draw a member’s name out of the barrel.”
