Guy's up and running on epic trip

Guy Schweitzer is on his way home – but it may be three months before he arrives in Scarborough!

The 48-year-old has started an epic 4900km journey, running across Australia from the coast of West Australia to Redcliffe peninsula.

He left Port Hedland before dawn, at 4am, on Sunday with well-wishers and two supporting runners alongside.

On Monday he was alone in the outback – as he will be for much of this remarkable adventure – with a few cattle and more than 100 road trains.

“Better get used to that as that will be my lot for the next month or so,” Guy said, in the first of his Home Run social media posts at sunrise on Monday.

Yesterday, on his Facebook and Instagram pages he shared a video approaching Marble Bar, more than 200kms into his journey.

"Today was a good day, lots of thumbs up, waves and toots from the road trains," said Guy who now heads out into the deserts.

The director of MGN Civil will be self-supporting for much of the run, which is expected to take between 80 and 90 days.

No rest days are planned but his schedule is flexible, with no deadlines or fundraising targets.

In recent days a longer southern route around the Simpson Desert has been mapped out due to flood water in that area of central Australia.

Just a goal of finishing at Scarborough Harbour Brewing, in Bird O’Passage Pde, which Guy co-founded with wife Sonia and opened two years ago.

His journey will the follow the remote unsealed Gary Junction Road, south of the McDonnell Ranges to Alice Springs.

Then south to Finke and the Simpson Desert (where support will join him), on to Birdsville, ‘ghost town’ Betoota, Innaminka, Noccumdra, Cunnamulla, St George, Warwick and Scarborough.

Guy will carry a ‘Sat’ phone to enable live tracking and messaging when out of phone service and a one-man tent, which he will use for most of the journey.
