Health warning over contact with dead bat

Metro North Public Health Unit is recommending anyone who had contact with a bat on Monday near Southern Cross Catholic College, King St, Woody Point to seek medical attention.

A bat was found on the ground near the school on March 17 and given to a bat care organisation by a member of the public. It later died and could not be tested for Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV).

All bats have the potential to carry ABLV. ABLV infection is fatal to humans and transmitted through bites or scratches from infected bats; however, effective post-exposure treatment is available and can prevent infection.

The Metro North Public Health Unit is working with the school to communicate this information to students and parents.

It says members of the public should not handle bats under any circumstances, even if they appear dead.

If you find a sick or injured bat, phone the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or a local bat care organisation.
