Helping Those Hurting Most
Driving along empty streets past shuttered shops is hard for all of us, so spare a thought for the people behind those ‘closed’ signs.
Council is currently in the process of refunding $1 million worth of food licencing fees to restaurants and cafes that have had to close their doors, or can only sell take away.
“It’s the least Council can do to try to help these guys get by, they are at the beating heart of what makes every retail precinct around our region so vibrant,” said CEO Greg Chemello.
“And when we come out the other side of COVID-19, we want them to still be standing here with us to celebrate that return to normality.
“The best thing locals can do is continue supporting our local businesses by buying online, having food delivered from local restaurants and getting a coffee at your local café if you can afford it.
“More than just a little bit of cashflow, your support and smiling face will make a world of difference for those hospitality workers fighting every day to keep their doors open, pay their rent and keep the lights on.
“But most importantly, these guys are trying to keep locals employed. Which I think is everyone’s top priority right now - jobs.
“Food businesses don’t need to apply for this reimbursement, the repayment will appear back in your account via whatever means you paid Council.
“I hope this helps our local hospitality sector remember that even though times are tough, Moreton Bay is tougher!”
