Historic building helps meet demand

One of Bribie Island’s oldest buildings, the former masonic lodge at Bongaree, is being opened up again.

Bought by Moreton Bay City Council in 2022, it has had some “minor building works” and is being renamed Bongaree Meeting Place.

“We’re excited to reopen soon after some temporary improvement works, delivering a community meeting room,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.

“The building has and will continue to be a place for people to gather and connect so its new name Bongaree Meeting Place is the perfect fit.

“The next chapter for this building’s history may see it used for small meetings, activities, or community events while other restoration continues.”

Constructed in the 1880s, the building at 25 Banya St has been a school, church and more recently a masonic lodge until Bribie Freemasons listed it in 2021.

To stop the heritage building being demolished, Council bought it and prepared a Conservation Management Plan for activation, upgrades and maintenance.

Bongaree Meeting Place can accommodate 20-30 people for activities such as meetings, small group classes, training, and support programs.

“Opening the building for community use will help meet the demand for smaller meeting spaces on Bribie Island,” Cr Brooke Savige said.

“I look forward to welcoming the entire community to the space when it opens in May.”

Fees for use have been reduced pending future upgrades when they will be reviewed.

The community meeting room will be available to book in May 2025.
