Dolphins NRL have announced their latest signing in 21-year-old Cowboys' forward Tom Gilbert. The Brisbane-raised young gun has inked a three-year deal with the club from 2023.

In a message to club members, the Dolphins revealed Gilbert was a Norths Devils junior and has taken the opportunity to play with an NRL club closer to home.

Gilbert joins the Dolphins' ranks of experienced forwards which includes Felise Kaufusi and brothers Jesse and Kenny Bromwich who starred in the Storm's 70-10 demolition of the Vodafone Warriors last night.

Dolphins' NRL CEO Terry Reader said signing Gilbert was a great pick up for the team and a good story about an NRL player coming home to represent a club from his area.

"One of the key strategies for establishing the Dolphins in the NRL is to give more young local players the opportunity to progress to the elite level of the game," Reader said.

"Tom is a young, tough and uncompromising forward who has now established himself as an NRL-class player.

"What is most exciting for the Dolphins is we know he has the best years of his career just ahead of him".

Versatile middle forward

Tom Gilbert has played 30 NRL matches since his debut in 2020 at just 19 years of age.

He was named the Rookie of the Year in Queensland's 2019 Intrust Super Cup competition and represented the QLD under-20s team and the open age QLD Residents' side in the same year.

Although a middle forward through his junior career, Gilbert has shown his versatility by playing on the edge at second row in the NRL.

Gilbert will join a Dolphins squad looking to sign its 'marquee player' for the inaugural season in 2023.
