Jets' grand final countdown

Moreton Bay United will tonight aim to finish a remarkable season by landing one of  Queensland's biggest football prizes.

The Jets face Gold Coast Knights, who won the NPL Qld premiership, at Suncorp Stadium in the season-ending Grand Final (kick-off 7pm).

Victory for Jets would cap a stunning season. Twelve months ago, they just escaped relegation on the final day. This season Jets finished runners-up.

It was their second-best NPL Qld finish and a late goal from Joe Scott beat Brisbane City 2-1 in the preliminary final to book today’s clash with Knights.

Just before 7pm Jets will walk out for the third grand final in club history. Jordan Farina scored the winner in 2015 and returned to the club this season.

Current players Rhys Gwynn-Jones and captain Declan Smith played in the 2017 final, as did Cameron Millar, who is now head coach.

“It’s been a very good season,” defender Gwynn-Jones said, “but this hasn’t just happened.

“A lot of hard work has gone into it, so props to all the boys and Cam (Cameron Millar) and our coaches.”

Team-mate Sam Knight, in the sixth grand final of his career (won 3, lost 2 so far) went further saying second place was “an amazing achievement”.

“But the problem is … there’s an element of greed in our dressing room,” he said. “We have people who really want to win a trophy this season!”

Both regular season matches were tight. Jets drew 2-2 on the Gold Coast with Knight scoring a late equaliser. In the return at Wolter Park, Farina levelled in a 1-1 draw.

“I think the grand final (against Knights) will be a tight game again,” Knight said.

“They’ve been front runners this year and have good players. They’re tough to beat – and so are we.

“We have to treat it just like every other game this season. Everyone has to turn up on the day, stay calm and stay focussed on the job.”

Gwynn-Jones agreed: “Both matches were really close this season,” he said, “this (final) will be tough … I just hope we can get one more goal than them!”
