"Little cafe" named national champion

Angie Moore says it was a “complete surprise” to hear her “little Caboolture café” named an Australian Small Business Champion.

The Coffee Patch on Hasking beat 25 finalists to win the Café category in a star-studded National Gala Presentation Evening at The Star Sydney.

“I had no idea … I didn’t even have a speech planned,” Angie, a mother-of-three, said. “I wasn’t sure we were at that level.

“One of the key words (in the citation) was how we try to nurture people through food and coffee. Nurture a sense of community.

“We want everyone (who comes to the café) to feel that we care and it’s not just a transaction.

“We have people who have been customers here every day for five-and-a-half years - and know 95 per cent of our regulars’ orders.”

Angie paid tribute to her café community, business team – “you are the backbone, my rock, my sounding board” – and her family.

Steve Loe, Founder of the Australian Small Business Champion Awards 27 years ago, said there were key reasons for The Coffee Patch’s success.

“A small business today requires steadfast commitment, leadership, savviness, creativity, people skills, vision, social consciousness and a spirited drive," he said.

“All elements of success our independent judging panel pinpointed among key reasons for selecting The Coffee Patch on Hasking as the 2025 Champion of the Cafe category.”

It is the culmination of a journey over four decades for Angie whose earliest cooking memories are serving hotdogs at Pine Rivers Netball canteen, which her parents set up.

“Family gatherings are a big part of my upbringing and our family culture and this is where my passion for food began and continues,” she says on The Coffee Patch website.

Angie grew up on a 12-acre property at Narangba, has been a member of Narangba Hack and Pony Club and a flag bearer on Anzac Day for many years.

She has also been a legal secretary on Bribie Island and was a founding staff member of Caboolture TAFE Community Child Care Centre.
