Major road opens after fatal crash

UPDATE: Police say Steve Irwin Way has now reopened more than four-and-a-half hours after a fatal truck crash at Beerburrum today.

Emergency services were called to Steve Irwin way at Iona Road around 10.45am following reports a truck had hit a tree.

Upon arrival, crews freed the driver and a passenger who were stuck in the cab.

The male driver was in a critical condition and crews performed first aid, before he was declared deceased at the scene.

The male passenger was flown to hospital in a stable condition.

Steve Irwin Way remained closed in both directions until after 3pm today before reopening.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances which led to the crash on the major arterial road.
