Makeover boosts road safety at Bongaree

A three-metre high stainless steel sculpture featuring two-dimensional pelicans will be the centrepiece of a $1.6 million makeover at the western end of First Ave at Bongaree.

As part of the Placemaking Project, two new raised pedestrian crossings will be installed, 480sqm of footpath will be replaced and 600 trees or shrubs will be planted.

Moreton Bay Regional Council approved the project at last week’s Council meeting, awarding the $1,475,130 contract to The Landscape Construction Company.

Councillor Brooke Savige (Div 1) said the revamp would have a positive impact on the Bongaree precinct.

|“Our grounds and maintenance teams do a great job keeping it fresh and beautiful but it’s evident it’s ready for a facelift and this project will deliver just that,” she said.|

“(It) will combine general maintenance and renewal with upgrades and beautification to capitalise on what is already a stunning and very popular area.”

What’s in store

The work will take place between the First Ave Service Rd and Toorbul St/Welsby Parade at Bongaree.

Also earmarked for the project are blue, yellow and green fish to be stencilled on new asphalt along Toorbul St/Welsby Pde and at the intersection of First Ave, work on stormwater drains and a pedestrian crossing to be built through the adjacent car park.

Cr Savige said while replacing an existing toilet block was not part of the project the work is part of another project scheduled for this financial year.

Work on the Placemaking Project is scheduled to start in late January-early February next year and take 16 weeks to complete, with construction predominantly at night to minimise disruption to businesses.
