Making the grade – three times

Moreton Bay Raiders are hoping for a grand finale to their “topsy turvy” season with all three graded sides through to Rugby League Brisbane finals.

Raiders’ regrouped for 2020 with a new committee and have seen their Open Men and Under 14 Division One and Division Three sides finish in top four places.

“It’s a great success for a small club which is growing and evolving,” says Charmaine Hall, Raiders’ Grants and COVID co-ordinator.

“Through our topsy turvy 2020, our small band of young men have been dedicated to their football and this commitment has resulted in all graded teams making it through to finals.”

Great bond

The Open Men start the series tomorrow (October 3) in the Division Three North semi-final against Pine Central at Emerson Park, Grange, kick-off at noon.

Raiders finished in second place, level on 26 points but ahead of Pine Central on points difference and beat them twice in the regular season.

“We have a new team of players from around the area, all playing for their mates and the club,” says coach Mark Thacker, “they have formed a great bond coming into the finals.”

Final awaits

As Minor Premiers, Raiders’ Under 14 Division Three side is straight through to the grand final at Les Hughes Sports Complex, Bray Park on October 11 kick-off 11.15am.

Raiders finished three points ahead of final opponents Valleys, who were the only team to beat them early this season. But Raiders made up for that win a 28-20 win in the return.

“It’s a privilege to coach a group of players that strives to get better every week,” says coach Brad Stephenson, “and show such pride in the Raiders’ jersey.”

High hopes

The Under 14 Division One team finished fourth on the ladder behind their semi-final opponents and Minor Premiers Logan Brothers.

But, Raiders were the only team to take points off Logan in an 18-18 draw and will be hoping to go one better in the semi at Ken McKell Oval, Keperra on October 11, at 11am.

“We have had a great season with plenty of positives,” says coach Larry Dickson, “we are confident we can beat anyone on our day, we just have to prepare right, play our best football and we will go very close.”
