Miles racing towards F3 seat

Miles Bromley, from Newport, has set his sporting goals and wants to reach them – by going fast.

The 15-year-old is looking to step up from go-karts to the open-wheel racing cars of Formula Three (F3).

With no direct step between the two, Bromley was invited for a test in a Formula BMW car with Tim Macrow Racing (TMR) at Winton Raceway, Victoria.

Next test day

Formula BMW is an entry-level for drivers, the same route Australian star Daniel Ricciardo took to Formula One teams Red Bull, Renault and now McLaren.

TMR’s development program was “extremely pleased with Miles’ maturity, ability and car knowledge,” said his father Grant.

“They have invited us to test the F3 car when they next have a track booking.”

Chance to impress

If Miles impresses again his chance of a place in the TMR team for 2022 increases, though it would be budget dependent.

Stepping out of karts for the first time, Bromley hit speeds of 180km/h in the two-litre, six gear Formula BMW car around Winton Raceway.

“The car can go at 240km/h, but the track wasn’t right for it,” he says. “It was a lot faster and better than go-karts.

'Average start'

“There was no racing, it was just a day to test my ability. I thought I started average but picked up more speed and driving skills as it went on.

“I hope by next year to get a seat in Formula Three. It’s a matter of finding a team.”

The best current option appears to be Tim Macrow Racing, a professional team based in Melbourne, which runs development programs for young drivers.

Invaluable

It was started by Tim and his father Peter in 2005. Tim raced until 2016 becoming one of Australia’s most successful Formula Three drivers.

That experience would be invaluable to Miles Bromley, who only started racing karts three years ago.

He has since won the 2020 Ipswich Cup, Triple Crown Championship and was third in the Toowoomba Valley Winter Carnival.

Bromley will take on his first endurance kart race at Ipswich on June 5 swapping the driving seat halfway through with a team-mate.
