Moreton Bay prepares for heavy rain with sandbag stations now open

Sandbag stations have opened across the City of Moreton Bay, with heavy rainfall forecast over the next few days and the risk of flash flooding in some areas.

Moreton Bay City Council has alerted that "there is an increased risk of severe weather for some or all of the region today and the next few days." Council is urging residents in flood-prone areas to prepare early and collect sandbags now if needed. 

Sandbags can help slow water entering homes and reduce stormwater surges through drains. While they won’t stop flooding completely, correctly filled and placed bags can reduce the amount of water reaching your place.

• Petrie
• Deception Bay
• Narangba
• Woodford
• Elimbah
• Beachmere
• Toorbul
• Caboolture

If you’re heading to a sandbag station, remember to bring your own shovel or an extra to help out someone else. Residents are required to fill their own bags. Council is also asking people to take only what they need and lend a hand to neighbours if possible. Supplies will be replenished as they become available.

For residents who are physically unable to collect sandbags due to age, illness or other limitations, the State Emergency Service (SES) may be able to assist. Call 132 500 for support.

How to prepare now

• Check, make, ore top up your emergency kit with essentials

• Bring pets inside and secure loose outdoor items

• Take care around trees and watch for falling branches

• Avoid unnecessary travel

• And remember: if it’s flooded, forget it
