Moreton Bay's top dogs revealed

Doggy data has revealed the top 10 breeds and names of man’s best friend in Moreton Bay region.

Border Collies are “pau-ficially” our leading breed with 4764 registered with Moreton Bay City Council.

Second is Labrador Retriever 4060, then Maltese 4032, Staffordshire Bull Terrier 4009, Australian Kelpie 3041, Australian Cattle Dog 2576, German Shepherd 2211, Jack Russel 2036, Cavoodle 1874 and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 1857.

Bella has come out on top of residents’ favourite name for their pet pooch with 872 followed by Charlie 728, Luna 696, Molly 606, Ruby 593, Buddy 888, Daisy 572, Coco 539, Max 530, Rosie 438.

There are 66,844 dogs registered – a figure which is steadily increasing as an average of 240 new residents arrive each week.

Mayor and dog owner Peter Flannery is urging residents to ‘paws’ on International Dog Day (August 26) to ensure their pets are registered with Council.

“Dog registration helps Council quickly reunite you with your pet if they ever get lost and also supports our responsible pet ownership programs,” he said.

“Both dog and cat registration renewals are currently being sent out and are due on September 30, so we are reminding residents to ensure their pet’s details are up to scratch.

“Every lost pet deserves to come home and registration is what helps make this happen.”

However, the Mayor’s breed of choice - Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund – just missed the City’s top 10 breeds.

“The breed tends to make most of the top 10 dog breed lists in Australia, but in our City they are the 12th most popular,” he said.

International Dog Day is about promoting responsible ownership including registration, proper care, training and affection while appreciating the impact dogs have on our lives.”

All dogs and cats must be registered by 12 weeks of age or within 14 days of being brought into City of Moreton Bay, per the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and Animal Management Local Law 2023.
