New Bribie bridge on the horizon

A new bridge to Bribie is closer to becoming a reality, with consultancy firm AECOM securing the contract to develop a business case for the project.

State Member for Pumicestone Ali King says the project is an important step towards key infrastructure that will help Bribie deal with increasing road usage.

“Queensland really is the place to be, and northern Moreton Bay even more so, so we’ve seen higher population growth than ever before,” Ms King explains.

“Today’s announcement is so important to our Bribie community because it means we are one step closer to a new bridge.

“The Palaszczuk Government committed $4 million to planning and finalising a preferred option for a new bridge.

“With strong local growth comes more pedestrian, bike and commuter traffic than ever before, so we need this link to keep Bribie Island moving.”

Assessment of existing bridge

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey has assured locals that the existing bridge is structurally safe.

“We inspect and properly maintain the Bribie Island Bridge regularly, but it’s important we look into the future,” Mr Bailey says.

“A new bridge will make travel to the Island safer, more reliable and better cater for active transport, which we know is booming in the area.

“AECOM will build on previous projects that considered corridor options, confirm a preferred option and begin early design activities.

“Thanks to Ali and her continued advocacy for the project we are now seeing progress that will benefit locals and tourists alike.”

How to get involved

Ms King says the community will have a big role in the business case.

“I know how passionate locals are about our community and our road and transport network, which is why consultation will be so important,” she says.

“We need an option that is fit for purpose and meets the needs of Bribie Islanders.

“I encourage community members to engage with the project and have a say when the time comes.”

Funding for construction of the new bridge will be considered in future funding rounds against other transport infrastructure priorities across the state.
