New names for region's new city
Public consultation is now open to decide names of five new suburbs which will be part of huge new Caboolture West regional city.
The State Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council plans to alter existing boundaries of Upper Caboolture, Wamuran, Rocksberg and Bellmere.
This would create new suburbs with the suggested names of: Waraba (for the city or suburb in it), Lilywood, Wagtail Grove, Greenstone and Corymbia.
Members of the public can comment on the proposed names, which were put forward by Council, until February 3, 2023. Click here.
It follows community engagement by Council, including with the Kabi Kabi Peoples Aboriginal Corporation which has endorsed use of Kabi Kabi word Waraba.
Caboolture West will be massive development within the Moreton Bay with 70,000 residents, 30,000 houses and 17,000 new jobs, on almost 3500 hectares.
It will also have nine state primary schools, four state high schools and the proposed Bruce Highway Western Alternative helping link it to Brisbane.
The final suburb name decision will be made by the Queensland Minister for Resources and published on the Department of Resources website.
If approved, changes will be recorded in the Gazetteer of Place Names, the official record of approved names recognised under the Place Names Act 1994.
