New Tigers president makes her mark

Gayle Wetzel Fitzgerald may be the first female president in the Redcliffe Tigers AFL Club’s 47-year history, but she says the role is very much a team effort.

“It’s about the team I have around me – they are very supportive,” Gayle says.

“Our culture is amazing, it’s very family-oriented and we have a philosophy of being 'one club’, where everyone is equal – we want everyone to feel included.

“Our members are so supportive – everyone is keen to volunteer.”

Building on success

Gayle is excited about the 2021 season and says she and her team are determined to continue to build on past success.

“We are looking at fielding an extra five teams this year – mainly juniors and female teams.

“We fielded a Colts team last year for the first time in five years and we will again this year.”

Gayle says the return of the Colts is a significant milestone, bridging the gap between junior and senior teams.

Focus on wellbeing

The obvious goal for the year ahead is for a full-length season, but Gayle says the club will also focus on mindfulness and wellbeing.

“We want to look after our players both on the field and off the field,” she says.

Teamwork makes the dream work

Gayle is honoured to be the club’s first female president, having grown up in Melbourne and been around football clubs her whole life.

“Being the first female is special, but I am here to do my job and I have a team around me that are amazing.

“It’s fantastic that the club is putting their faith and trust in me.”
