NRL double-header at Redcliffe

Posted: 10am 10 Aug 2021

Moreton Daily Stadium at Redcliffe will host an NRL double-header this Sunday for round 22, as the NRL looks to lessen the load on Suncorp and Cbus Stadiums.

The NRL announced its revised plans for round 22 this morning, with games also to be played at Townsville and the Sunshine coast as well as Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

On Sunday, a double-header will be staged at Moreton Daily Stadium with the Warriors trying to keep their finals hopes alive against the Bulldogs at 1.50pm and play-off contenders Cronulla and Newcastle completing the round at 4pm.

And with an end to lockdown, the stadium will be able to welcome fans to watch the games – at 50 per cent capacity – under a COVID-safe plan.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo says: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming fans back to our games in Round 22”.

“I’m particularly excited to see Redcliffe hosting a double header on Sunday and the Sunshine Coast having the opportunity to host two games across the round. These are excellent outcomes for fans in both regions.”

Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy is excited the club will be hosting the double-header at its home – Moreton Daily Stadium.

“We’ll be operating at only 50 per cent, but we’re grateful to have the opportunity to telecast nationwide on pay per view and free to air. It’s a wonderful chance to put Moreton Daily Stadium and the Dolphins in front of the nation,” Mr Murphy says.

There appears to be potential for smaller venues like Moreton Daily Stadium to host more games, with the NRL keen to manage the impact on Suncorp and Cbus Stadiums.

"I think we'll see that there will be a number of venues in the South-East corner of Queensland. I think we would like to take some games to regions, although at the moment we're, again, very aware that the Queensland Government has discouraged the general public from moving out of the South-East corner to regions of Queensland,” Mr Abdo says.

"So, we have to consider that as well. But all of those things will be taken into consideration, we'll talk to the government. I think the government would also like us to play some regional games when they consider the time is right.”

Tickets will be on sale via Ticketek shortly.
